Segmental Features of Hong Kong English: A Contrastive Approach Study

The current study employs a contrastive approach to analyze five consonantal features (TH stopping/ fronting, L vocalization, [n, l]/[s, ?] conflation, /r/, /v/, /w/ substitution and consonant cluster modification [CCM]) of Hong Kong English (HKE) from 37 online sound clips 29 speakers. Compared the traditional approach, uses world Englishes paradigm data, which aligns more with recent movement Englishes. result shows that all exist in corpus; however, TH-stopping/fronting CCM are common than others. results behind HKE could be hinted comparison Cantonese, L1 Hongkongers. Moreover, help develop categorization speakers—Hong Continuum—which potentially facilitates discussion under long run.
